Deck Your Space Out - Things to Consider

Diana Xhango • September 21, 2023

Decks are a prime entertaining space and a go-to spot for hosting your family and friends. It’s an extension of the indoor living space and something we’ve put more emphasis on having post-COVID-19. The Canadian weather can get tricky with allowing only so many warm months out of the year, however, having a beautiful, serene outdoor space to enjoy and entertain your loved ones is always worth the project. Whether in the suburbs, the hustle and bustle of the city, cottage life, or by the lake, a deck can be the perfect place to host a summer barbeque, a movie night, or simply kick back and enjoy the view.

A few things to keep in mind before starting your project are to do your research on the type of deck you’d like, your budget, and what type of materials is best suited for your space.

Type of deck materials to consider

Pressure Treated Wood
- This type of wood is ideal for outdoor construction as it has a long life span and is less expensive than the alternatives. Pressure treated wood (PT) is more resistant to fungal decay and termites or other insects, as opposed to untreated lumber. Using pressure-treated wood will also require the most maintenance, you will need to stain and weather-proof the wood after a few years so that it keeps looking fresh. Considering the climate you live in should factor into your material choice, PT wood is susceptible to shrinkage, as this is something that naturally happens in the warm and cold months depending on location.

Cedar Deck
- Cedar is a durable wood that’s naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect infestation, as well as resisting moisture absorption. This means that the material tends to last longer, needs less maintenance, and doesn’t warp or split easily. Cedar decks can last for 20-40 years or more, depending on maintenance and climate. With strong colour tones and consistency that can be sanded, stained, and treated, cedar is generally an attractive wood choice for homeowners.

Composite Deck
- Composite decks are the best choice for low maintenance. This material is durable and resists mold, scratches, stains, and splinters. There is no annual sealing or staining required, even in harsh Canadian weather conditions.

This material is available in a variety of colours and grains and offers the look and feel of natural wood. The only maintenance required is washing with soap and water. Most manufacturers offer a minimum 25 warranty on the stain and grain.

PVC
- Similar to composite decking material, there are also PVC deck boards that are made from virtually indestructible plastic and may include additional foaming agents to enhance durability. Just as you would use wood, composite, or aluminum, this material is more expensive than composite, however, the lifespan is around 30-50 years.

Things to consider

While the materials listed above are universally used in fence or deck projects, keep in mind that companies offer a range of product choices such as; different finishes, textures, and colours. Do your due diligence and ensure you are picking the right material for environmental factors, budget, and style preference. We always recommend talking to an associate at a home improvement store or reaching out to a licensed professional.
